For every Chinese Shar-Pei reputable and knowledgeable breeder out there, there are very many who are decidedly not.
This website has been put together by a group of
ethical, dedicated breeders of Chinese Shar-Pei to help anyone who is
thinking of getting a Chinese Shar-Pei.
First to make sure that getting a dog is the
right decision, second to ensure that a Chinese Shar-Pei is the right dog
for your family and your lifestyle and third to help you find the right kind
of breeder.
If you know nothing about where or how to buy a
puppy, or even if you think you know something, this is where you start.
Your first step should be to read the Breed
Information, including the Breed Standard. If you don't know what the
Standard for the Chinese Shar-Pei is then you can easily be fooled into
paying a lot of money for "rare" colors or coat types that are in fact
either major breed faults or disqualifications
(ie bear coat, flowered,mini's,toys) EXAMPLES
There is nothing wrong with a dog that has either a major fault or a
disqualification under the breed standard, except they can not be shown (AKC) or
bred. They make perfectly wonderful pets and should be sold as such, and no
ethical breeder will charge any more for these than any other.
If after reading about the breed you still think
it might be right for you, the next sections deal with how to tell reputable
breeders from unreputable ones. What to look for and what to avoid plus
gives an explanation of what various terms in ads mean or don't mean.
We have also provided links to various good
breeders of Chinese Shar-Pei in both the US and Canada - they might not have
puppies available when you contact them but they should be able to refer you
to other good breeders who do have puppies available or will be having a
litter shortly.

And please! don't get in a hurry. A good dog is worth the time required to properly research and evaluate both the breed and the breeders you consider.
